Three suspects arrested as family mourns slain Berea accountant

- TANYA WATERWORTH

THREE suspects have been arrested in connection with the killing of Durban accountant, Hoosen Dhoda who died while trying to save colleagues during an attempted armed robbery at a Berea business on Monday morning.

After the news of the arrests, spokesperson for the Dhoda family, Bilal Dhoda said the tragic loss of his cousin, Hoosen was taking time to “sink in” and with the news of the arrests, he said, “We want justice done. We will have to wait and see what happens.”

Yesterday, KZN SAPS spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala confirmed that the three suspects were arrested in uMlazi in the early hours of Friday morning by the SAPS National Intervention Unit and Trio Crime Unit.

“They will appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday,” said Gwala

The incident, which has changed the lives of the Dhoda family and left local residents in shock, took place just before 8am at Royal Travel in Problem Mkhize (Cowey) Road as the working week got underway.

Witnesses said a staff member on an upper floor spotted the three well-dressed men entering their workplace, one of whom was carrying a gun.

She started to scream and as Dhoda entered the office, it is believed he tried to disarm one of the attackers and was shot dead during the scuffle.

Dhoda had worked at the company for 20 years. Bilal Dhoda was on his way to work when the news reached him.

Family members rushed to the scene.

“They first came to the women. He shielded them. He got shot in the chest,” said Bilal.

Hoosen Dhoda was due to celebrate his 47th birthday this week.
