THE WEEK IN WORDS

- COMPILED BY TREVOR BRUCE

I’ll be 75 later this year but have no plans to retire. I have no reason to retire. I’m not one of those grannies who wants to sit at home. – Ans Botha, who trains SA running sensation, new Olympic and world record holder over 400m,Wayde van Niekerk, in Rio de Janeiro after his record run. I’d love to tell you guys more but I honestly can’t remember the race. All I know is that I left it all out there tonight. I left it in God’s hands here at a challenging Olympics. – Wayde van Niekerk after his amazing run. I have never seen anything like that. It is amazing. This young man has done something truly special. He could go under 43 seconds – I tried and I failed. – One of the greatest athletes of all time, US star Michael Johnson, after Van Niekerk’s win. Johnson’s record for the 400m had stood for 17 years before this week.

This is a really exciting opportunity for me. Not only will I get to chill in Durban, but I also get to interact with cool listeners to East Coast Radio daily. – New top DJ Phat Joe who is the station’s new Drive Time host. The ANC had to choose between Zuma and the metros, once again the ANC chose Zuma, don’t blame it on the EFF, blame it on the leaders of the ANC. – EFF leader Julius Malema at a press conference in Alexandria this week where he emphasised that one of the conditions his party had insisted on before considering a coalition with the ANC was they remove Jacob Zuma as president. Thoko Didiza, we shall meet in Parliament. There is no mayoral position for you, no matter what happens, or else be prepared to sit with us on the opposition benches. – Malema at the same conference mocks the ANC’s mayoral candidate for Tshwane. The assault and the nakedness in public were very serious, but to add insult to injury, the whole incident was rehashed and appeared on the front page of the Daily Sun newspaper three weeks after the incident. It was also distributed through social

media. – Pretoria High court judge Cynthia Pretorius sums up what happened after Rose Mashiane was caught in bed with another woman’s husband. The wife and her sister then dragged her naked out of the house and beat her with a sjambok as she ran screaming down the street.
