“MEN have hopelessly outdated ideas about cooperative relationships,”Wendy, my club’s feminist told me sourly.“Cy probably thinks‘cooperative’means a woman irons whatever a man gets wrinkled.”

“I take it he let you down on defence again,”sighed.

Wendy and Cy the Cynic were today’s East-West.

“Cy led the jack of hearts against four spades,”Wendy told me:“king, ace, four. I knew South had the queen of diamonds for his bid of 3NT. His pattern was probably 4-2-3-4.

“So I led a low diamond,”Wendy went on.“South won in dummy and let the nine of trumps ride. The Cynic took the king and did something right, for once. He led his last diamond, and I won and gave him a ruff for down one.”

“Why are you upset?”I frowned.“You defended well.”

“All by myself,”Wendy growled. “Defence is supposed to be a partnership effort. If Cy just leads the ten of diamonds – the unbid suit – at Trick One, we beat the contract with less effort on my part.”

“She’s a hard woman to please,”Cy told me.
