Lions rip into Boland
Champions hit back after surprise loss last week
RIGHT wing Selom Gavor scored two tries, and flyhalf Marnitz Boshoff kicked 15 points to help the Lions to a comfortable Currie Cup win against Boland at Ellis Park last night.
In total, the defending champions scored nine tries in a dominant display at home; the perfect bounce-back after going down to Griquas the week before.
Johan Ackermann’s men were on the scoreboard as early as the fifth minute when Gavor, who enjoyed a good game, rounded off in the corner after a few long passes by Dillon Smit and Howard Mnisi.
Not long after that try the hosts went 12-0 up after left wing Anthony Volmink finished off a move started by Andries Coetzee deep in his own half and after stepping his way past several defenders.
A Boshoff penalty after 24 minutes put the home team 15-0 up and left them firmly in charge.
But the visitors, almost against the run of play, hit back close on the half-hour mark when lock Joubert Horn powered past two defenders to score next to the uprights.
Lions No 9 Dillon Smit then got a third try for his team after an excellent move down the blindside, but Boland struck back again, this time through No 8 Wayne Wilschut, who crossed after his team had driven him over from a 5m line-out.
But just when it seemed that would be all for the first half, the Lions took a quick tap penalty deep in their own half after the hooter had sounded and, after several players had handled the ball, centre Jacques Nel went over for his team’s fourth try. It gave the hosts a 27-12 lead at the break.
The Lions continued where they left off in the second half, scoring a further five tries. Gavor got his second, and Victor Sekekete, Mnisi, JW Bell and Dylan Smith also crossed for five-pointers. Boland were unable to add to their first-half points.
