Durban dagga puffs itself up into a haze

DURBAN is reaching new heights on the international scene, making headlines around the world for not just good bunny chows and great surfing, but now apparently for some of the best cannabis in the world – not that that is a secret to many locals.

Famously known as the “ageing hippie” on That 70s Show, US-Canadian actor, comedian and musician Tommy Chong recently launched a “designer range” of cannabis products – one of which takes its name from Durban.

Chong used the city’s name in his product called Durban Haze, as part of his US-grown range of legal cannabis, and launched it in Denver, Colorado, at the “cannabis connoisseur” shop, Northern Lights Cannabis Co.

His new range includes other titles such as Blue Dream and Grape Stomper. These two strains and Durban Haze are popular hybrid strains that originated in California and Africa. Durban Haze is a sativa-dominant hybrid better suited to growing outdoors.

His designer line is available in Arizona, California, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Colorado. The Northern Lights Cannabis Co made history in January 2014 with the first-ever legal recreational marijuana sale in Denver.

According to some online reviews by cannabis users, Durban Haze is the best of the range.

Chong had his association with the US National Cannabis Industry Association cut after a video emerged of him nodding off at the wheel, then trying to mask the odour of cannabis before meeting with his parole officer. He was the association’s celebrity marijuana activist.
