LONDON: Tom Doherty was thrilled when he caught a monster carp that smashed the British record.

After a 20-minute struggle, he reeled in a fish known as ‘Big Rig’, which weighed a colossal 32kg, beating the previous record by 1kg.

But Doherty’s jubilation has been tainted after he and his family received death threats from angry rivals. The angling world has been fiercely divided over Big Rig, with some saying the “hand-reared” carp was already a record-breaker when it was placed in the fishery and should not be verified as a new record.
