It’s Salsa time

- STAFF REPORTER

DURBAN has a reputation as being the most spicy city in the country, and now a professional group of dance instructors will help people spice up their dancing.

The Red Salsa Team are offering free salsa lessons on Heritage day.

The dance has hot and spicy connotations and, like the sauce, is a mix of different ingredients. It’s roots are based on different genres such as Puerto Rican rhythms, which are open to improvisation and continuously evolving. It is a lively, sensual dance with basic steps which make it easy to learn and Durbanites now have a chance to add their own flavour.

Red Salsa Team will show the dancers all the essential moves and teach them how to sharpen up their shoulder-shimmies, spins, rolls, body isolations, leg and arm work.

Once the basics have been mastered, the dancers are taught various styles which include the Rueda, Kazomba and Bachata.

“The Salsa sessions are fun for all ages and it’s free and we make sure that sessions take place even in bad weather! It is also an opportunity to learn some new steps, let one’s hair down, make new friends and have a great time” says Louise Howell, marketing manager at Suncoast Casino. The lessons will take place at their amphitheatre.
