DJ Sbu’s latest release, a collaboration with Zahara, is already showing early signs of success as their single, Ndingubani, released yesterday morning, was already trending on Twitter and had gained 31 000 views on YouTube despite not yet being played on radio stations nationwide.

The song is a follow-up collaboration to their successful Lengoma and Indlela Yami singles. Sbusiso Leope, popularly known as DJ Sbu, said the single had been inspired by his experiences in life and the soul-searching he haf done in the past couple of months.

“The title of the song, Ndingubani, stands for ‘Who am I?’ in Xhosa. The meaning of the title represents my communication relationship with higher power and me trying to find my purpose in life. It’s a spiritual song which includes African drum beats and house sounds,” he said.

He told The Independent on Saturday Zahara had written the lyrics and sung it for him on his birthday and he started to produce the sound for it.

“We’re good friends and she’s a talented songwriter who creates poetic music,” Sbu said.

DJ Sbu first made a name for himself in the music industry as Mzekezeke – a masked Kwaito character, and later made it big in house music for his producing skills with his Remember When It Rains hit single.

“When my daughter was born, she changed the way I approached everything in my life. I wanted to make more inspirational and timeless songs which she could be proud of after I’m done with music, ”he said.

Sbu also applauded the creativity of Durban based artists such as Tira. “I think his breakthrough in music showed that you don’t have to move to Joburg to make it and I appreciate the Durban sound which has been dominating around the country,” he said.
