Solomon Willy at Seaman’s Corner

- SITHEMBILE MKHWANAZI

DURBAN-based musician Solomon Willy and his band are set to light up the scene with jazz at Seaman’s Corner this evening.

The music producer will be on guitar and his band features Sibusiso Mashiloane on keys, Sbu Zondi on drums and Ntuthuko Hlongwa on bass.

Willy was born in Nigeria and was exposed to music at an early age as a member of children’s church choir. He later taught himself to play the drums and keyboards.

In 2009, he formed his band which is now recognised for its distinctive compositions and an extensive mix of popular, African music and jazz.

His career flourished when he took part in the 2010 World Cup talent search audition at the SABC in Durban. The judges, Neil Comfort and Malcolm Nhleko, were blown away by his performance and gave him a platform.

He received an award from the Department of Arts and Culture, KZN eastern region, for Band Search 2011 at the Pavilion, in Westville.

Willy has performed all over South Africa and Nigeria, and in 2009, performed in Australia with the Keychange music project, where he toured nine cities as the lead guitarist for South African Zulu Choir.

He is a session guitarist for African Sinakho Disability Theatre, Soul Trill, and Jazz Connection and has recorded sessions in gospel and secular music. Willy plans to release a debut single, followed by an album, later in the year.

He will be at Seaman’s Corner, Hammarsdale from 6pm. Tickets cost R30.
