After a week of daily drudge, wake up and smell the coffee
Bean there? No, you haven’t done that
IF YOU love a caffeine fix, today is the day to enjoy a guilt-free cup as it’s international coffee day.
The Independent on Saturday found a healthy coffee culture at a few of the city’s favourite hangouts.
Khehla Sibiya is a barista at Jacksonville Coffee in Florida Road: “I’ve been a barista for seven years. My favourite part about what I do is interacting with the customers and getting to know my regulars,” he said.
“Yesterday, I served the former speaker Logie Naidoo. He was here for the first time and promised he’d be back and recommend Jacksonville to his friends.”
A coffee lover himself, Sibiya said, “I start every morning with a double shot of espresso.”
Samantha Crawford from Glenwood and Lisa Shenker from We s t - ville sat down to an afternoon cappuccino. “It’s so good, I don’t even need sugar,” said Shenker.
Love Coffee, in Windermere Road, is a regular stop for Amy Humphrey.
Originally from North Carolina, in the US, Humphrey is working in Durban as a nurse: “The coffee here is definitely better than Starbucks,” she said.
Venturing through to the vibrant red shipping container that is Freedom Café, the IOS chatted to barista, Michael Nota. “I love a rich, creamy cup of coffee. Especially in the mornings for that extra burst of energy,” he said.
