Mr KZN sets sights on Mr SA
WITH the gauntlet of four challenges thrown down to provincial winners done and dusted, Mr KZN, Ashley Eddy, 28, is hoping he will be among the 12 finalists on the stage competing for the title of Mr SA in Johannesburg in November.
Eddy, a mechanical and electrical engineer, has a number of other pageant titles under his belt, including Mr uShaka and model of the year. He has taken time off work in his bid for the national title.
“I don’t like to do things half-heartedly,” he said this week. “The challenges included getting corporates to advertise, hosting a charity event which had to be sustainable, as well as having to do daily acts of kindness.”
His sustainable charity event was to return to his junior school, Addington Primary, on the beachfront, where he set up a vegetable garden.
“We selected 30 kids to learn gardening techniques, incorporating these skills into the life orientation curriculum. We also donated books on how to grow a vegetable garden.”
With green fingers and an interest in eating healthily, Eddy has made YouTube videos on how to create a vegetable garden.
“It’s all about being self-sustainable. At first my friends laughed at me about putting up my videos, but now they all want to set up their own gardens,” he said.
For their acts of kindness, contestants are sent a daily objective which has to be posted on Facebook.
“I went to the Hillcrest Aids Centre Trust recently, it was truly an emotional day.”
