Fresh new comedians on stage

- TANYA WATERWORTH

THE NEXT Trevor Noah may just be on stage at the Next Comedy Generation Show to be held in Durban on Friday at the Jewish Club.

The brainchild of Durban comic Carvin Goldstone, this will be the ninth time this groundbreaking development comedy show is staged, with the intention of discovering the province’s best comic talent.

Comedian Neil Green, who will be introducing the line-up of fresh new talent said this week: “It’s a giving platform and a healthy environment for up-and-coming comedians to showcase their best work. It’s also allowing them to grow, away from the added pressure and sometimes hostile bar and club stages.”

He confirmed that new funnymen will be coming from all over KwaZuluNatal – Durban, Port Shepstone, Richards Bay and Pietermaritzburg – and the crowd could end off the week with some good laughs.

“I actually performed at the second Next Gen show and I was genuinely astounded by the quality of material some of these comics were serving up.

“Some of those I saw for the first time that night now perform alongside me regularly.

“I feel proud as I watch them continue to flourish and look forward to telling people one day that I was there the first time they were on stage.”

And as a seasoned comic, Green said controlling the nerves is all about being well prepared.

“I tell them they can’t prepare for those feelings, but they can be prepared when it comes to their material and that they must go over it again and again,” he said.

“If you feel confident about what you are going to say once on stage, that will help take the edge off,” said Green.
