Ex-jockey drops bail bid

- TANYA WATERWORTH

FORMER jockey Graham Gregorowski, 29, from Shongweni, who is charged with murdering his partner Janet Scott, dropped his bail application on Wednesday in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court.

Scott’s murder on October 22 sent shockwaves through the horse-racing fraternity among which the Scott family are well known.

Gregorowski’s bail hearing started in a previous appearance in which he gave a detailed statement about events which had taken place during the evening prior and leading up to Scott’s death at his home in Cliffdale Road, close to the Shongweni Polo Club.

Gregorowski said he had gone to the club for drinks with his housemate and had been involved in a fight with a third party.

When he returned home he and Scott had argued, and he had “given her a backhand” before slamming the door to the bathroom when he went to shower.

When he emerged, Scott was lying on the floor, with blood coming from her nose. He had tried to resuscitate her before dragging her to the bedroom. He also said he had tried to commit suicide by slitting his wrist and hanging himself, but woke up on the floor.

During that hearing, State prosecutor Nqobile Malinga highlighted the injuries sustained by Scott, that her face was “so swollen and full of blood” she was unrecognisable.

Magistrate Terrence Buthelezi adjourned the case to the beginning of February. Gregorowski remains in custody.
