Midnight show for DJ Lag’s EP tour to city

- SITHEMBILE MKHWANAZI

ONE OF the leading Gqom producers and DJs to come out this year, DJ Lag, will return to Durban on Friday as part of his self-titled EP tour.

His debut EP was released last month under his Londonbased record label, Goon Club All-stars. It was heavily influenced by the Gqom Durban sound which has rapidly gained mainstream popularity with artists such as Babes Wodumo, Big Nuz and Okmalumkoolkat.

This year, the 21-year-old producer’s track was featured by the Superbalist fashion brand and he became the first Gqom DJ to have his track on their TV ad.

“I just made the tracks for fun and people enjoyed what I was doing, then guys from the UK Goon Club All-stars wanted to release the tracks,” he said.

Lag’s career began in Durban, where he’s known as one of the creators of the underground genre.

His first exposure to the Gqom sound was in 2011, when he heard the Ithoyizi single by the Naked Boys and started to experiment.

“When I first heard the track, I told myself I wanted do the same sound, but I ended up doing something else, which was Gqom.

“I had strong kicks from hip-hop and chants from hiphop, so my style changed it and formed Gqom. The kicks represent Gqom and the word Gqom reflects the sound of a kick or a hit or a percussion.”

Since his arrival on the Gqom scene, he has played major events in Joburg and Cape Town.

His fans can expect him to perform Ice Drop and Ghost and will also get an opportunity to listen to his latest songs from the EP.

The Durban show will be at Club 101 (Union Street) at midnight on Friday, December 16. Entry is R50.
