Start the holidays laughing

- LLOYD GOVINDSAMY

COMEDY lovers can start their holiday season with a laugh as Riaad Moosa & Friends take to the stage tonight at the Durban ICC.

Moosa is back in Durban for the first time in two years to host the show. He will be joined by Darren Maule, Simmi Areff, Yaaseen Barnes, Jason Goliath, Neil Green and Tumi Morake.

Maule said he was excited about the show and wanted to try some material for a one-man show based on his experience in radio.

“We have some crazy colourful characters (listeners, producers, management and guests) people need to know about. We have to remember that with radio there is always the risk of ‘little ears’ listening, not to mention the BCCSA, but to a live, paying and willing audience, the gloves are off.”

Maule said his material for this show was based on observational comedy.

“It’s people saying and doing things that are organically funny and then I tell you the story, with just a pinch of dramatic licence, and we laugh at it again together. Nothing is more funny or more frightening than the human condition.”

He has performed in Durban many times, but Maule said the thrill never faded.

Yaaseen Barnes said he was “super amped” for tonight.

“Durban always shows so much love for live comedy and has always showed me a good time. I’m just going to bring my style of personal comedy, a mix of one-liners and my stranger ideas with a Cape Town flair.

“I’ve only been to Durban twice, but Durbanites showed me what beautiful people they are,” said Barnes.

Tickets are from R200 at Computicket.
