Vuyo super excited to ‘share’

- SITHEMBILE MKHWANAZI

TONIGHT, enjoy a jazz performance by Vuyo Mjindi band at the Durban jazz lounge, Jazzy Rainbow.

At the show, Mjindi will play the piano, accompanied by his band mates: bassist Philani Ngidi, Zolani Rhafuza on drums, guitarist Josh Swanson and saxophonist Phumlani Mtiti.

“I am super excited to share the music with Durban people. It is going to be a beautiful night and you can expect good quality music filled with heart felt energy,” Mjindi said.

Born in the Eastern Cape, the pianist and arranger was introduced to music in church at 14. He played the keyboard, which led him to pursue studies in jazz and improvised music in a formal institution.

He’s currently studying music at the University of KwaZulu-Natal under Burton Naidoo, Neil Gonsalves and Sibusiso Masheloane.

The 24-year-old’s music was influenced by South African jazz artists such as Abdullah Ibrahim and the young Nduduzo Makhathini, but he has mostly looked up to the late Moses Taiwa Molelekwa.

He has already worked with artists such as Sibongile Khumalo, Camagwini and Asanda Mqiki.

“I would describe my style as neo-traditional jazz, because my music is heavily influenced by jazz and traditional music sung in our rural communities but still transcends to the current sounds of today. And all compositions are renditions from the heart dedicated specifically to certain things and people,” he said.

This year he plans to perform at festivals.

“It’s all about introducing myself as a solo artist to South Africa. If all goes as planned, a national tour is on the way. I will be performing with a lot of great musicians as well to see their contribution to my music.” Venue: Jazzy Rainbow Club Entrance time: 7pm Entrance fee: R40 including a free drink for students with a valid ID (T&C)
