Zethe in soul legend tribute

- SITHEMBILE MKHWANAZI

TONIGHT, Zethe and her band will pay tribute to Afro soul legend Thandiswa Mazwai when they take to the stage at the Seaman’s Corner in Hammarsdale.

Her line-up will consist of a mix of her own compositions and covers. She will be joined by Zibusiso Makhathini on keys, Dalisu Ndlazi on bass guitar and Riley Giandhari on drums.

The Empangeni-born Afro/ soul/jazz singer has a degree in music, majoring in jazz, from the University of KwaZuluNatal.

Zethe has performed in venues around the province, including The Centre for Jazz, The Jazzy Rainbow, The Durban Playhouse, Bat Centre, The Chairman, Bertoua and Alliance Française.

“When I was younger, I used to sing a lot so it was natural for me to pursue music. It’s really difficult and I wanted to learn the fundamentals first,” she said.

The 24-year-old has also worked with Uzalo drama series, Khaya Records, Luthuli Museum, Florida Road’s Gordon Park, at the Safta awards at the Riverside Hotel and the Durban International Film Festival, to name a few.

She has been featured on radio stations and TV programmes. And this year, she’ll work on her album.

“I look up to people like Arthur and Lindiwe Maxolo. T hey came from strong musical backgrounds and their music is really inspirational to me,” she said.

At the show, she will perform her Afro Soul compositions and songs by Mazwai. “I’m excited about this tribute to one of the artists I admire.” Seaman’s Corner, Hammarsdale Unit 3 Saturday January 28, 7pm. Tickets: R30 at the door
