She’ll design your dream cake

- SITHEMBILE MKHWANAZI

WHEN it comes to wedding days, Rooweida Hassim makes sure it’s about tiers, not tears.

The owner of the Cake Etc, Hassim will have several of her creations on show at this weekend’s Bridal Fair at the La Lucia Mall.

Hassim was inspired by her mother and started her cake business in 1996. “I’ve always had a deep-rooted passion for baking and cake decoration. As a child, I was fascinated with fine works and unique designs.”

Her wedding cakes had evolved to being customised to the bride and groom’s taste, and ruffles and frills were big this year. “Personalised toppers have also become popular. Current colour trends shoe that pinks (salmon pink) and coral are still popular as well rose gold and champagne.”

She said that decorations and edible flowers must be prepared three weeks to a month before the delivery, but the cake itself should be baked a day or two before the wedding to ensure quality and freshness. Hassim encouraged brides to be active during the designing process. “Many brides do come in with photos from magazines and books. “They have all the freedom to stretch their imagination,” she said. She advised couples to look for an experienced and reputable baker for their wedding cakes. They should also ask to see pictures of previous work and to ensure the baker offered sampling or cake tasting.
