Meet Fugly, the walkabout pig

- TANYA WATERWORTH

BLUFF residents took to social media when Fugly the pot-bellied pig went walkabout in the streets on Wednesday.

Wisecracks, such as those asking whether the little pig had escaped from a well-known Bluff butchery, to whether he was looking for his Valentine, were widely shared, while some expressed concern over his welfare.

Local resident Trevor Steenekamp, who had rescued Fugly on his wanderings on two other occasions, went to help the pig find his way home.

“Fugly stays in the house down the road, but the owner recently moved and there are tenants staying there. Fugly stays in a pen at the back, but keeps escaping.

“This time, he had gone about 2km all the way up to Brighton Road. I know he loves bread, so I went up there. He was following me and I was feeding him bread,

“Then a car suddenly came past and Fugly took fright and ran into a nearby park. He just refused to come out again,” said Steenekamp.

With Fugly digging in his trotters, Steenekamp contacted local security company Security Force, with their officer Louis le Roux responding.

“We tried to get him to follow us again with the bread, but he’s a ballie and very stubborn. So we ended up lifting him into the back of my bakkie and taking him home,” said Le Roux yesterday.

But the story did not end there, as another Bluff resident offered to give Fugly a new place to stay.

“The owner had been looking for a new home for him, but he wanted to make sure it was a safe place. After all the posts on Facebook, another resident came forward and offered to take him.

“Her property is five times bigger than where Fugly was living, it has fruit trees and they are planning to make him a mud bath,” said Steenekamp.

On Thursday, Fugly moved into his new digs and perhaps he will now consider being the “little piggy that stays at home”.
