Curry and laughter

- SACHA VAN NIEKERK

DURBAN comedian Anasia Govender, 41, known on stage as Annalakshmi, is the only woman performer in this week’s Savanna Durban Comedy week.

Raised in Phoenix, the mother of three started performing as an MC and used comedy skits at events. “I became popular at weddings and started getting recommended. To take it a step further I offered to sing as well.

Serving comedy onstage and curry at her restaurant in Durban North, “the comedy remains part-time for now as I’m the owner and curry chef at Chilli Kadhai.”

Comedy with a cause is Govender’s main goal. “I’ve been on the stage regularly since I was six and would entertain family and friends. Comedy is evolving and I would like to think that my style is something that opens your mind to understanding social and other issues that some people would not encounter in mainstream news,” she said.

She says Durban’s comedy scene is “blazing” right now. “There are great comedy companies in Durban doing phenomenal things for rising stars. Comedy is growing exponentially.”

“Being a woman has not affected the laughs I get when on stage. The public love humour.”

Catch Govender at Butler’s Comedy Night in Hillcrest on March 29. Tickets R100. Presales at the venue, or at the door on the night!
