New Ballito cinema a cut above the rest

- SACHA VAN NIEKERK

THE Independent on Saturday was invited to the Ballito Junction’s opening event of the Nu Metro Cinema this week.

The new, eight-screen cinema complex features the first Xtreme cinema in the province and two VIP cinemas with an extended lounge area.

Live music drifted through the crowd, boxes were brimming with popcorn and guests were revved up for a pre-screening of

Beauty and the Beast in 3D. A single aisle divides rows of plush leather-like seats into two sections and moviegoers are able to recline comfortably in their chairs without disturbing the viewing pleasure of other guests. This alone elevated the whole experience.

Nu Metro managing executive Nitesh Matai said: “The fabric, design and mechanism of the chair was upgraded during manufacturing to be able to take strain and work perfectly.”

Finally seated and facing the largest cinema screen in the country, the movie began.

Dolby Atmos delivered 360º sound from overhead speakers, as well as an array of speakers placed strategically throughout the cinema. The sound immersed the audience in the action and sent vibrations through the theatre. Yet, surprisingly, the sound felt natural and was not too overwhelming.

“We’ve entered a new era in movie-going, by significantly improving the level and manner in which movies are viewed, along with the overall experience. We’ve led the way with multi-format cinema options at most of our cineplexes. We’re excited to introduce our Xtreme brand in KwaZuluNatal, following its success in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town,” said Matai.

The experience was definitely a cut above a regular cinema outing. The contemporary seating design, an improved counter service, as well as many other features makes the new cinema a must-stop destination on the Dolphin Coast.
