THE WEEK IN WORDS

- COMPILED BY LINDSAY SLOGROVE

If we vote in favour of the motion we will be saying to the DA and the EFF, you have been right all along. But if we vote against it we will be saying to the millions of South Africans: we do not care what you think. I am in Parliament because 11 million people voted for the ANC. Less than a million of those people are ANC members. Are we simply going to ignore the 10 million on the basis that they are not ANC members? – ANC MP Makhosi Khoza on the now-postponed vote of no-confidence in President Jacob Zuma.

We don’t take her seriously because we know that she is not criticising the ANC, but showing her anger disguised as criticism while attacking the party. She is angry at the ANC because she failed in her bid to become mayor of eThekwini. – ANC Youth League provincial secretary Thanduxolo Sabelo hits back at ANC MP Makhosi Khoza, calling her “the queen of grandstanding”.

I don’t want us to faff around… I’m going to push (for a decision) as soon as possible. My plea is that it will be swift, at least in the next month. – South African Rugby Union chief executive Jurie Roux on the elimination of two South African Super Rugby teams.

On behalf of the ANC, we wish to apologise to those who were invited, for the embarrassment and inconvenience caused. – ANC treasurer-general Zweli Mkhize, after the party’s youth league supporters disrupted the memorial service for Ahmed Kathrada on Sunday.

What hurt me the most was how humiliating and undignified it was for the family to have to stay with my nephew’s body for so long. They have been traumatised and they

need counselling. – Philani Mabuyakhulu, uncle of murder victim Lindani Mabuyakhulu, 32, whose body lay at the crime scene for nearly eight hours waiting for a mortuary van which never arrived because of a strike by morgue workers. Police allowed Philani to drive his nephew’s body to the mortuary.

The players enjoy the challenge of having to go to Africa and perform… combined with the history of our relationship with South Africa, we’re very keen to keep playing against South

Africa. – Rob Nichol, head of the New Zealand Players’ Association, after it was revealed New Zealand had rejected a proposal by the Australian Rugby Union to form a new version of Super Rugby which excluded South Africa.
