World-class music in tranquil Balgowan

- STAFF REPORTER

MUSIC lovers can head for the hills for the Michaelhouse Music Festival which starts on Freedom Day, April 27, and ends on April 30.

The programme offers world-class music in a number of genres – all performed in the tranquil setting of Balgowan.

Last year’s winner of Idols SA season 12, Noma Khumalo, will be joined by legendary vocalist Sibongile Khumalo.

Regular music gig, Music in the Hills, moves for the weekend from its regular home, The Knoll Barn, to Michaelhouse and will be part of the festival.

The festival opens with Choral Sounds celebrating young singers from the UP Youth Choir, Michaelhouse, Constantia Park and Howick Prep.

Friday afternoon sees the KZN Youth Orchestra take to the stage. The evening highlight will be Sibongile Khumalo and Noma Khumalo.

Saturday starts with some musical nostalgia with Days Gone By performed by the Michaelhouse Staff Quintet. Saturday evening features The Kiffness, Rubber Duc, Easy Freak and Pillar Box Red. Sunday starts with a trio playing Beethoven and Mozart followed by a midmorning choral concert featuring the KZN Midlands Youth Choir, the new Drakondale Girls’ Choir, Clifton Notties Prep Choir and Pmb Children’s Choir.

The lunch time concert features youth performers with the KZN Philharmonic Ensemble under the baton of William Silk with the KZN Midlands Youth Choir and soloists.

Sunday afternoon sees Christopher Duigan (piano) and Junnan Sun (clarinet) performing clarinet sonatas. The programme concludes with the KZN Philharmonic.
