July magic and mystery

Entertainer’s illusions

- ARTHI GOPI

IF YOU’RE stumped about what to wear to today’s Vodacom Durban July, and the hours are counting down, you may need some magic.

And who better to ask for magical fashion advice than Durban’s own famous magician?

Mo Magic, whose real name is Mahommed Moorad, is one of the country’s best known magicians and, having entertained audiences around the world, will be in his element today as the Colour of Magic takes over the Greyville racecourse.

It’s all about the illusion, the colour, the magician’s cards, wands and the fashion, said Mo, who will entertain guests in a private marquee.

“This year’s theme at the races is great; there is so much you can do with it when it comes to fashion, but also good for me as a magician and mentalist as I will be able to draw the theme, the fashion and horse racing elements into my routines,” he said.

Mo said while designers would have worked their magic in bringing designs to life, drawing on the Colour of Magic theme would not be difficult for anyone to incorporate into their look.

“I think today we will see many people who will use playing cards, which magicians use, as part of their dress design, or in the top pocket or hat.

“It’s small magic touches like these that can elevate a store-bought item of clothing.

“However, many people may also have researched what a magician dresses in, and they would most likely have seen a very classic image of a magician in a tuxedo with a long tail and a top hat, so we may see men dress up in that style, maybe in bold colours to make it trendy,” he said.

Mo added that magic acts that involve making money multiply may be the popular choice for the day.

But he added he would include “mentalism” – mind reading – which adult audiences appreciated.
