On the lookout again for hidden musical gems

- NTHUTUKO MLONDO

SOUTH Africa is filled with many musical gems who have yet to be discovered. Concerts SA’s Music Mobility Fund is an initiative to discover these hidden gems and provide them with a platform to shine on tour.

“Since 2014, the Music Mobility Fund has been funded and administered by Concerts SA. We do two rounds a year, which allow us to fund tours throughout the whole year. Currently we are on the seventh funding round,” said project co-ordinator Ignacio Priego.

He said the fund was important because it provided musicians who may not have the necessary funding to stand a chance to tour more, promoting their own brand of music and helping them reach new audiences.

“The call for projects (to apply for funding) is distributed through traditional media (thanks to our publicists), reaching mostly print, radio and online. We also use the social media platforms of all the organisations involved, including all Samro members.

“The assessment of the applications is based on criteria such as relevance, quality, viability or costeffectiveness, among others.”

Enquiries and applications should be submitted by e-mail to concertssa@samro.org. za, by fax to 086 500 7028 or by post to Concerts SA, c/o The Samro Foundation, 20 De Korte Street, 4th Floor Samro Place, Braamfontein, Joburg, 2001.

For more information, see http://concertssa.co.za, follow @ConcertsSA on Twitter. The deadline for applications is July 23.
