Township schools tournament to light up Midlands

-

HILTON College is set for a hive of cricketing activity over the next four days with the 10th anniversary of the KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union, KZN Department of Sport and Recreation and Sunfoil Township Schools Tournament.

The KZN Department of Sport and Recreation is heavily involved in the tournament with young cricketers, mostly from disadvantaged backgrounds around the country, showcasing their skills.

Some 288 players are expected to take part in the tournament which sees teams from Gauteng, the Western Cape and Border join eight teams from KZN. The visiting sides will have teams in both the U15 and the U19 age groups.

Organisers have expanded the event to include venues away from the base at Hilton College. Matches will be hosted at the Pietermaritzburg Oval as well as Weston Agricultural College in Mooi River.

All matches in the past have followed the T20 format. However, for this year’s 10th anniversary a 50-over format has also been introduced.

Twelve 50-over games are scheduled for today, 24 T20 matches for tomorrow and 12 matches take place on Monday with the final on Tuesday.

In a change from previous years the final game will see the best U15 and U19 players selected in a side to take on a KZN Inland U15 and Academy XI. – Sports Reporter
