South Africa has become a nation under threat

- From: SITHARA SEWLALL

YOUR front page lead story “PIN ‘kidnap’ trend alert” (IOS, July 15), refers.

Many members of my family and close friends have been victims of crime.

We are warned by the police and security companies to keep our doors and gates locked. Put the alarm on, even during the day and even when you are inside the house. We have become a nation under threat.

We cannot enter the shopping mall without double-checking our car is locked.

Even then we are uncertain if our car will still be there when we return.

We cannot visit family or friends without wondering if we will be attacked en route or whether hijackers will accost us in the driveway. We cannot attend functions for fear of being attacked by criminals.

We are followed home from the banks and the airport, robbed in broad daylight and shot dead, execution style.

In South Africa, besides the police, we have a multi-billion rand security industry.

Despite this, and the access controlled entry to our homes and suburbs, we are still not safe.

We are trapped by inhuman, savage criminals. We are held ransom by criminals devoid of feelings and prone to pulling the trigger.

And where are our police and security agencies?

They are busy protecting President Jacob Zuma and his acolytes while they are looting the country.
