RETURN VISIT LEFT US FULLY SATISFIED

-

LONG a favourite with Durban North diners, it was no exception when we were on a mid-week night. The staff were being kept on their toes.

We chose to sit on the balcony, where all the other tables were occupied, as were many inside.

We ordered a sparkling water (R18) and two beers (R25). After initially choosing different starters, we combined forces and ordered the mezze platter (R130) of grilled haloumi, crispy tentacles, marinated olives, grilled calamari tubes and olive-drenched toasted slices.

All the ingredients were pretty good. We had chosen the peri-peri flavour for the grilled calamari tubes and these had quite a kick. The haloumi and olives went down well and one cannot go wrong with tentacles.

The staff were excellent. Not intrusive, but checking regularly that we were happy.

For our mains, one order was prawn and fish cakes (R109), which my wife said were crammed with chunks of fish and prawns. The mash won favour and the accompanying vegetables of carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and beans, were fresh and tasty.

Then there was a fish and calamari combo, with very good chips (R125), that also hit the spot; while I had a seafood medley pasta (R135), that was one of the evening’s specials.

The pasta was perfect and the seafood included mussels, tentacles, small prawns, bits of fish and calamari tubes. It was a decent helping, covered in a mildly spicy, creamy sauce, just right for this dish.

We also shared a Simonsig Cabernet/Shiraz (R155) and found it an easy drinking wine.

A little merry, with full tummies, we did not find the desert menu tempting and ended with cappuccinos (R27). It has been some time since we had a meal here and it was well worth the return visit.
