Icy weekend makes way for sunny week ahead

- TANYA WATERWORTH

THE cold snap is over and warmer weather is on the way.

That’s the prediction from the SA Weather Service after snow, gale force winds and sleeting rain left Durbanites wrapping up warmly this week.

Last night, forecaster Thandiwe Gumede said the poor weather conditions should start to clear by this morning. “We may wake up to cloudy conditions and a little rain, but this is set to clear, although there may still be some rain further up the North Coast. Durban should be sunny with some clouds. By tomorrow, no rainfall is expected although temperatures will remain around 19ºC and by Monday it will really start warming up,” said Gumede.

The gale force winds are also expected to die down, with a light to moderate south-westerly wind expected in Durban today, becoming an easterly wind by the evening.

While there was some heavy snowfall on the Drakensberg and Sani Pass on Thursday and yesterday, snow watchers on social media were last night already reporting that the snow was melting.

Gumede added that the temperature for Giant’s Castle in the Drakensberg was expected to be about 10ºC today.

Meanwhile, KZN Sharks Board (KZNSB) head of operations, Mike Anderson-Reade, confirmed that shark nets will remain lifted owing to the continuous stormy sea conditions with the nets being lifted on Wednesday ahead of the storm front.

“Shark safety gear will be replaced as soon as the seas have settled and we are confident that the gear will remain stable. The following protected beaches – Salt Rock, Durban from Sun Coast, Bay of Plenty to uShaka, and Margate main beach – will remain open for bathing, but this is dependent on the lifeguards who will make appropriate decisions depending on the prevailing surf conditions.

“Bathers are advised to consult with the lifeguards prior to entering the water,” said Anderson-Reade.
