Parents veto skinny pants

- SAKHILE NDLAZI

WHEN it comes to skinny pants as part of a school uniform it seems parents at Pretoria-West High School have the last word.

After a meeting on Thursday evening where the parents voted, it seems the only time that pupils will be wearing skinny pants will be at home or on casual day.

MEC of Education Panyaza Lesufi said he was encouraged and satisfied with the decision taken by the parents and encouraged other parents to do the same.

“As parents we must always take charge of our children’s behaviour and empower educators to instil the necessary discipline,” he said.

Chairperson of the school governing body Brian Zyster said it was a unanimous decision.

“All the parents in the hall voted against the skinny pants. And as a parent I’m relieved because the skinny pants would have created class distinction among pupils and created bullying,” he said.

He said although the children felt disappointed he believed they would get over it and focus on studying.

One of the pupils who preferred to remain anonymous said he was disappointed by the verdict.

“Skinny pants give a sense of style to the normal boring uniform. And when we look good we do good and pass well he said,” he said.

Another Grade 10 pupil said he was not bothered by the skinny pants protest.

“I am here to learn, whether in baggy or skinny pants it does not bother me,” he said.

Lesufi said he would like to thank the SGB for a swift intervention in this regard.
