THE WEEK IN WORDS

- COMPILED BY LINDSAY SLOGROVE

We will have to manage (Curwin) Bosch correctly. He will play for the Springboks for a very long time… he’s done well. I’d like to see the confidence he’ll take back to the Sharks. Continuity is crucial but… in the weeks he’s been with the Springboks, you can see the confidence oozing out of the youngster and he’s learned a helluva lot.

– Springbok coach Allister Coetzee on Sharks star Curwin Bosch. It’s no longer a case of criminals being poverty stricken. These are professionals who know exactly what they want. They will do anything to get it, even if it gets them killed.

– Hassim Randeree, 71, whose Mercedes-Benz, which had been hijacked twice, and was used by robbers during a cash-intransit heist in Springfield Park on Monday. This is nonsense. In our school days we followed school requirements as it was the rule. There was order; we should not allow this to happen, where kids think they can decide everything without consequences.

– Zaahid Vally on Facebook after pupils at Pretoria West High School boycotted classes, demanding they be allowed to wear skinny pants at school. He was one of the last editors of the “old school” and only the most senior colleagues dared address him as anything but Mr Green. He was admired and respected by most for his outstanding writing skills, as well as being a polished public speaker.

– Former news editor of The Independent on Saturday, Trevor Bruce, remembers Michael Green, who edited the Daily News and Sunday Tribune at the height of the apartheid era, and who died at the age of 87 this week. One needs to bear in mind that KZN is the epicentre of political violence. The dynamic has changed in substantial ways in that it has moved from inter-party violence to largely intra-party killings. This is linked to the politics of patronage, and that patronage has become toxic in South Africa.

– Political analyst Imraan Buccus on the killing of ANC councillor Kwazukwakhe Mkhize after a community meeting at the Inkanyezi Community Hall near Camperdown, in the Mkhambathini municipal area. Four municipal officials have been killed in KZN this year. The journey thus far has been very emotional for all of us. But we understand that this is bad for all. Richard’s family and I have come to a place where we understand nothing will bring him back.

– Sonya Ferreira, life partner of Richard da Silva, who, with Jared Dwyer, died when a car crashed into them as they cycled on the M4. She was speaking at the Durban Magistrate’s Court where the case against the accused driver, Omesh Ramnarain, was adjourned.
