The Independent on Saturday

Held ransom by criminals

-

From: SANJAY SINGH Queensburgh I REFER to the article “Armed guards protect temples” which appeared in last week’s The Independent on Saturday.

There is a very simple explanation for the attacks on worshippers at temples, churches and mosques and the unacceptably high crime rate.

Instead of protecting citizens from criminals, police and the security agencies are preoccupied looking at new ways to protect our corrupt and “captured” president and his criminal network.

We cannot go to places of worship for fear of being attacked. We cannot visit family or friends without wondering if we will be attacked on the way or whether hijackers will accost us in the driveway. What would once be a simple visit to the nearest shopping mall has become a potentially life-threatening expedition. We are trapped and held prisoner by inhuman, savage criminals who roam the country with impunity.

So, while our president and his acolytes loot the country, knowing they enjoy the full protection of the law, ordinary citizens are at the mercy of trigger-happy subhuman beings.

What is really disappointing is the stunning silence and lack of action by the DA. As the official opposition and watchdog, it has so far failed to have the constant threat facing law-abiding citizens addressed. It seems it is preoccupied with the pursuit of Zuma and his cohorts to the exclusion of all else.
