Parts of CBD are also badly in need of a clean-up
YOUR front-page lead story, “R35bn beach facelift” (The Independent, December 2) refers.
We are really disappointed that the eThekwini Municipality is spending huge amounts of money only in certain parts of the city, at the expense of other more deserving sections of the central business district.
The once popular Durban Casbah area has degenerated into a slum and nothing is being done to clean up and rejuvenate this part of the city.
One just has to take a walk and you can see how filthy the place is. Also, you cannot walk freely without tripping over pavement traders.
The city centre is a shadow of what it was in the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s when the municipality had proper supervision, the police force was more proactive and crime and grime were at an acceptable level.
It is my belief that there is a very serious lack of supervision to make the workers more productive and law enforcers to be more vigilant. Under this present regime, there is very little likelihood that this will be achieved in the near future.
What has to be done?
There is a need for a high degree of accountability of all departments responsible for the oversight in delivering municipal services, and for law enforcement to be ratcheted up.
If you want to make Durban a clean and First World city, it needs political will, which is lacking.
