Speaking to The Independent on Saturday this week, ahead of the Savanna Durban Comedy Week to be held between February 28 and March 9, Johannesburg based Friedman said: “Durban is a very friendly place, it’s a beautiful city and I always feel like I’m on holiday when I’m there – even when I’m working.

“And coming from a landlocked city, I have two pilgrimages

Friedman, who is known by many from his performances on Loyiso Gola’s Late Night News, particularly enjoys live shows and having fun with the audience. “I have always been at home on the stage, where there is always a lot of improv (improvisation) and you can’t compete with that feeling of excitement. “As a stand-up comedian playing a song, I don’t have to do a straight song and will include the audience if that is what the situation needs,” he said. Having started out as a musician, Friedman is used to creating music but, he said: “When it comes to putting together a song, an idea can come to me and I can put it together in five minutes or sometimes I can labour over it for a few days.

“I am a musician first and foremost, but friends who are in the music industry often envy my ability to chop and change during a show, which I can do with musical comedy.

“I enjoy the audience,” he added.

The Comedy Week event organised by One Fire Comedy, will see some of the top names on the country’s comedy circuit arrive in Durban for four shows:

Wednesday, February 28: Amsterdam Comedy Club in Glenwood.

Thursday March 1: Butlers Comedy Night in Hillcrest.

Friday, March 2 at Mount Edgecombe, Sandpiper Room Club House.

Friday March 9: Friday Night Comedy at the Gateway Hotel, UMHLANGA.

Apart from Deep Fried Man, the line-up includes Dalin Oliver and Keenan Cerff from Cape Town, as well as some of Durban’s favourites, Liam Johns, Neil Green, Masood Boomgard, Troy Tesla, Arnotte Payne, Rory Petzer and Jem Atkins.

Speaking from Cape Town on Wednesday, Dalin Oliver, who is known for his clean cut and energetic humour, and who has appeared on Comedy Central, said he’s also looking forward to being in Durban and having a decent curry, with an absolute must being a stop in at Johnny’s Rotis after a gig.

“Durban is really cool and I’ve been there a few times, but I’m still really figuring out the slang. For this show coming up, I’ve written a piece on being a Capetonian in Durban and trying to make sense of it all.

“Durban people are not aware of all the confusion we face when we come there. It’s going to be fun and we are going to have a laugh,” said Oliver.
