Curry favour and win big

Pots of prizes for Durban cooks

- – Staff Reporter

IF YOU’VE got the hots for a good curry, whip up a recipe that would make the home of South African curries proud.

Durbs is the place for the ultimate mutton bunny, the complete chicken korma and the super spicy beef panang.

So, if you’ve got a flair for Indian flavours and a love for gourmet food with a bite, share your favourite homemade recipe with us and you may be cooking up your prize recipe next month as part of the Springfield Retail Centre Curry Cook-off competition.

This hot and spicy competition is open to amateur cooks from the age of 18 years, where 12 contestants will be selected to make one curry from four categories, mutton, chicken, seafood or vegetarian (without rice or bread), for the top spot.

To enter, simply create an original recipe from one of the four food categories and submit your recipe, along with the entry form, which can be downloaded from the Springfield Retail Centre website. Entries can be dropped off at Independent Media, 18 Osborne Street, Greyville, Durban, in The Independent on Saturday competition box at the entrance. Alternatively, entrants may complete the online entry form and upload their original recipe via the Springfield Retail Centre website.

All entrants should select their preferred category, title their dish, (such as Madras Mutton, Cheeky Chicken) as well as create a team name (examples: The Incredibles, Red Hot Chilli Preppers, The Spice Girls).

The entries will then be judged and only three entrants per category will be selected to compete on Saturday, March 17, at the Springfield Retail Centre.

All 12 successful finalists will then be allocated a number and time slot and be allowed to cook for an hour on the day, with the help of an assistant of their choice and with ingredients supplied by Springfield Retail Centre.

Prizes in each category are R5 000 in cash for first place, a R1 000 hamper and set of Lassar knives for second place and a R1 000 hamper for third place.

And with these amazing prizes up for grabs, get your entries in today. The closing date is March 1 at 4pm. Terms and conditions apply. The competition is not open to professionals working in the culinary industry.
