Futshane brings bass magic to KZN

INTERNATIO­NALLY acclaimed electric and acoustic bassist Lex Futshane tours venues around KwaZulu-Natal this week.

The prolific composer, arranger, performer and educator is a music graduate from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He teaches bass and manages a teacher training programme at the Johannesbu­rg Youth Orchestra Company.

Futshane is a founder member of Bassment – a 12 double bass ensemble comprising six jazz and six classical bassists.

He has toured and performed extensivel­y in countries like Swaziland, Zambia, Mozambique, the US, Cuba, South Korea, Britain and Germany.

He has worked with, among others, Winston “Mankunku” Ngozi, Rashied Lanie, Bheki Khoza, Bheki Mseleku, Ezra Ngcukana, Ulrich Sussie and Brice Wassy.

The tour starts on February 28 at the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Howard College. Starts 6pm. Tickets R80; R50 pensioners; R25 students. On March 1, Futshane is at The Chairman in Mahatma Gandhi Road. Starts 10pm and tickets are R150. On Friday he is at the Luthuli Museum in Groutville. Show starts at 7pm, tickets R30, while March 3 sees him at The Jazzy Rainbow in Morningsid­e. Doors open at 7pm, tickets are R100 including a free drink.
