K9 units call for donations of dogs

-

MEMBERS of the public have been called on by Durban metro police to donate suitable dogs in an effort to increase the operational capacity of its K9 unit.

Spokesperson Senior Superintendent Parboo Sewpersad said the unit worked with the German Shepherd, Rottweiler and Malinois breeds.

“We are requesting the public come forward should they have animals to donate. These should be between 9 months and 3 years old, must be confident, energetic and not scared of people or loud noises.”

He stressed that the dogs had to be strong and have a good temperament.

“Police dogs are used to provide both proactive and reactive services in the police service. They are deployed for narcotic detection, explosive detection and tracking and apprehending of dangerous suspects.”

He explained that they were improving the unit to enhance its capacity to fight crime in the city.

Once members of the public made contact with metro police, an assessment of the dog would be done and if the animal was found to be suitable, then a contract would be signed.

“Dogs are donated unconditionally to the service and suitable ones will be examined by metro’s veterinary services, inoculated and tagged with a microchip.”

He said suitable dogs, once tagged, would be socialised and assessed for their suitability for training within the K9 unit.

“Trained dogs will be deployed operationally as patrol dogs.

“The generosity and assistance of the public at large will be the key factor in contributing and ensuring the safety and security of all South Africans,” said Sewpersad.
