The Independent on Saturday

Futile waste of resources

- From: LINDA BROOKS Cape Town

I AM puzzled as to why you find it necessary to use that fold of paper to separate the property pages, the Home Improver adverts, the football supplement and the Saturday Live supplement from the news and the financial part of The Independent on Saturday.

The slip of paper is one third of the length of the tabloid parts of the paper and the width of one double page.

Therefore every three

Editor’s note: Thank you for your care about our environment. The Independent on Saturday is a strong supporter of green issues, particularly those that encourage citizens to limit waste and recycle wherever possible in our everyday lives. The strip of paper used to keep our supplements together is a prime example of our efforts to newspapers use one whole double page.

I don’t know how many copies you print but 30 000 would use 10 000 double pages. 10 000 sheets of paper completely wasted because there is absolutely no reason for it!

Most of us nowadays are trying to be more ecologically minded – recycling, not wasting water, avoiding products with too much plastic, and I think “saving trees” would be on most people’s list. Why doesn’t the Independent do its bit towards saving trees? do the same. Part of the newsprint we use is recycled paper. The strips are offcuts from other printing runs that would otherwise go straight into the recycling process. Being aware of our readers’ care for the environment, we are sure, once it has been read and enjoyed, The Independent on Saturday is recycled.
