Juventus to face Real, Liverpool draw Man City

- BARRY WHELAN

HOLDERS Real Madrid play Juventus in the quarter-finals of football’s Champions League in a repeat of last season’s final, while Liverpool take on Manchester City in an all-England duel.

Barcelona, the 2015 champions, are up against Roma, while Bayern Munich meet Sevilla in the two other ties in the draw made in Nyon, Switzerland, yesterday.

Real, seeking a third straight Champions League title, beat Juventus 4-1 in last season’s final in Milan. Barcelona, Sevilla, Juventus and Liverpool are drawn at home for the first of the two legs.

The ties will be played on April 3 and 4 and April 10 and 11. The semi-finals are on April 24 and 25 and May 1 and 2, and the final in Kiev on May 26.

The draw will be seen to be kind to Barcelona and Bayern, two of the favourites, while City coach Pep Guardiola has avoided two of his former clubs in Barca and Bayern but comes up against Juergen Klopp’s Liverpool – ensuring an English club will have a place in the semi-finals.

Liverpool are the only team to have beaten City in the Premier League this season, winning 4-3 at Anfield on January 14, having lost 5-0 in September.

Bayern have gone out to Spanish opposition every year since winning the Champions League in 2013, but will be favourites to overcome Sevilla, who eliminated Manchester United in the last 16.

Bayern sports director Hasan Salihamidzic said: “I am looking forward to the game; it will be interesting. That’s not an easy side; they have put out Manchester United. Spanish teams always play good football. We will have to be careful.”

Bayern and Sevilla have never met before, while the last time Barcelona met Roma in the Champions League in 2015 they thrashed them 6-1. – ANA-DPA
