THE WEEK IN WORDS
Thank you Zimbabwe! I am humbled to be elected President of the Second Republic of Zimbabwe. Though we may have been divided at the polls, we are united in our dreams. This is a new beginning. Let us join hands, in peace, unity and love, and together build a new Zimbabwe for all. – Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa yesterday after election results were released. We have to bring our A-game and more. Apart from that we have a huge respect for them and what they stand for and how they play. It will be an honour for us to play against them. – Lions coach Swys de Bruin ahead of the Lions versus Crusaders in the Super Rugby final in Christchurch today. It’s one of the most important trends that we are experiencing. It’s really about economic growth, economic equality and consumer welfare. – University of Geneva economist, Roni Michaely on Apple’s $1 trillion milestone and mega companies capturing the majority of profits. Apple and Google provide software for 99% of all smartphones. For every litre of petrol you buy, R5.30 goes towards these two taxes (General Fuel Levy and Road Accident Fund Levy). And when you look at all the factors that make up our fuel price, it is these two taxes that have increased far more than anything else in recent years. – DA leader Mmusi Maimane on the increasing cost of fuel. We need to educate young girls so they are able to identify gender-based violence as soon as it happens. In the age of social media, we are seeing girls and women being cyberstalked. That must come to an end. – Ncumisa Ndelu, organiser of the #TotalShutDown march against the abuse of women held in Durban this week. What I know is that they have very good equipment, but in truth they have never been of any use to local artists; all I have seen from them is just cruelty and playing with people’s hopes. – Maskandi artist Zibokwakhe “Phuzekhemisi” Mnyandu after criminal charges of fraud and corruption were laid against state-funded KZN Music House officials.
