NEIL HAYWARD BRIDGE

-

Contract: 7♠ by South

Opening Lead: ♣K. What is your plan?

Recommended Line: Getting to the diamonds on table is relatively easy, but they give you just two discards. You need to get three clubs away. You could cash two spades in hand, and then unblock the hearts, hoping the defender with three hearts holds just two spades. Not today. It is quite a knot that you have to unravel. The solution is quite ingenious. Win the first trick, cash the ♠A and the ♠Q, followed by the ♥A. Then lead across to the ♠K. This draws their last trump, and allows you to cash two diamonds. On these, you discard ♥K and ♥Q. You then cash three top hearts in dummy, which allows you to get rid of your losing clubs. Simple, really. Once you see it, that is.
