Ama-Zulu beaten again, another ‘sixer’ for Eagles

- Kamlesh Gosai

A THIRD successive defeat for Ama-Zulu dented their First Division promotion challenge, but local sides remained in the leadership mix after Thanda Royal Zulu maintained their unbeaten status and Royal Eagles enjoyed a mammoth victory at the weekend.

Ama-Zulu succumbed 1-0 to Stellenbosch FC in Kwa-Mashu yesterday when defender Junaid Sait fired the only goal of the game in the second half. The goal by the son of former Ama-Zulu star defender Kamaal Sait inflicted a second consecutive home defeat on the Durban side.

Usuthu fluffed an opportunity to equalise when midfielder Nkanyiso Zungu’s 82ndminute strike was saved by the visiting goalkeeper.

Saturday produced contrasting fortunes for the other local championship contenders. Thanda failed to score for the first time this campaign when they drew 0-0 at Santos, while Eagles made merry with a 6-1 mauling of rookies Magesi at home.

Eagles went three games unbeaten with that result, their second “sixer” of the season after they whipped Cape Town All Stars 6-2 last month. Four of the goals came from target striker Sedwyn George.

The other strikes against bottom side Magesi came from Siyanda Ngubo and Raymond Monama.

Thanda remained on top of the 16-team division, having kicked off the weekend with a five-point lead over secondplaced Jomo Cosmos.

That lead was intact after Cosmos drew their home outing 0-0 against Cape Town All Stars.

Ama-Zulu held on to third place after University of Pretoria lost to Witbank Spurs, and in another match yesterday Real Kings stayed in midtable with a goalless outing at Milano United.
