NTM threatens action

THE National Transport Movement has threatened to use its numbers to compel law-enforcemen­t agencies to probe alleged corruption at the Passenger Rail Agency of SA running into billions.

It also demanded the agency’s embattled board be allowed to finish its term. The union said it would mobilise its 10 000 members if the Hawks and NPA failed to properly investigat­e. – ANA

Robberies concern

OR TAMBO Internatio­nal Airport has expressed its concern over the follow-homes and robberies that have continued unabated.

Attack thwarted

PARIS: A man has died after attempting to carry out an attack on security forces on Paris’s Champs-Elysees avenue. Officials said the attacker rammed his car, which was found to be carrying explosives, into a convoy of police vehicles.

Pass closed

THE Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works announced yesterday that Chapman’s Peak Drive would be closed for three to four weeks.

Department­al spokesman Byron La Hoe said several rocks fell on to the road on the Noordhoek end “and caused significan­t damage to two catch fences and the road surface”. – ANA

Youth perish on roads

ALMOST 60 000 young people between the ages of 20 and 30 died last year from preventabl­e motor vehicle accidents, some of them occurring while they were behind the wheel.

“Last year 60 047 young people died mainly as a result of factors that could have been avoided,” said spokespers­on Simon Zwane. – Mercury Correspond­ent

Fisher took cocaine

LOS ANGELES: Carrie Fisher’s autopsy shows the actress had cocaine in her system when she fell ill on a plane, but investigat­ors could not determine what impact it had on her death.

The report says Fisher may have taken cocaine three days before the December 23 flight. She died four days later. – AP
