Wife’s tribute to ‘Superman’

- Samkelo Mtshali

THE wife of slain former ANC Youth League secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa said she could not imagine living life without him by her side.

Magaqa, who died earlier this month, was laid to rest in his village of Ibisi in Umzimkhulu on Saturday.

In a moving tribute penned to her husband and delivered at the funeral by a relative, Nomagugu Thobela, Gugu Magaqa said her husband would always be present in her life.

“My dear husband, my superman, I prayed for you before I met you, and when I met you I quickly learnt that you were far more amazing than anything that I had ever prayed for.

“I truly believed that God placed us in each other’s lives. In the midst of everything going on he helped us find each other every day,” Gugu said.

She could not imagine venturing through life without her husband, she added.

“I am amazed by you and the incredible man that you were, your integrity, your love, your wisdom. You were a strong and amazing man of God.

“I am proud of you Gaba (Magaqa’s clan name).

“My love, I saw you fighting for your life in hospital and we prayed together and you even promised me that we would soon be going home together.

“Little did I know that you meant the eternal home, but I know that you’re in a safe and better place; you’re now with God,” said Gugu.

She said her husband had been the greatest blessing that had ever happened to her.

Mapolo Dlamini, Magaqa’s uncle, said he would never forget Magaqa’s words while he lay on his hospital bed.

He said his nephew had told him that he was content knowing that he had worked hard for all his possessions and he had not stolen them from anybody.

“He told me that when you have possessions, you must be able to sleep peacefully because you have toiled hard for them.

“In his last speech, given on Father’s Day in Boschfontein, he advised his peers against being irresponsible parents who dumped their children with their grandmothers, leaving the elderly to suffer.

“He advised them to love their children,” said Dlamini. Magaqa had four children. The funeral was attended by several senior ANC provincial and national leaders, led by ANC provincial chairperson Sihle Zikalala, ANC treasurer-general Zweli Mkhize and ANC Youth League national secretary-general Njabulo Nzuza.
