Suspects crash stolen getaway vehicle

- MERCURY REPORTER

A GANG of hijackers who had just burgled a business in Greyville crashed the vehicle they were driving and abandoned it in the Durban CBD.

This followed a high-speed chase by a Blue Security armed response unit in the early hours of yesterday.

Blue Security’s community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said the gang hijacked a motorist of his VW Polo in Glenwood yesterday morning and then used it as their getaway car during the business burglary in Stamford Hill Road.

“Our armed response officers responded to the scene of the burglary but on their way to the premises, one of our officers spotted the suspects’ vehicle jumping traffic lights and he gave chase,” Mathios said.

“The suspects fled into the central business district where they crashed their vehicle at the intersection of Florence Nzama and KE Masinga roads.

“They abandoned the vehicle and fled. Clothing and electronic screens that had been taken during the burglary were recovered from the vehicle,” Mathios said.

SAPS and metro police attended the scene of the crime.

In a separate incident yesterday, quick-thinking Blue Security armed response officers arrested two suspects who tried to break into a property in Rampson Road at about 11.50am.

“A domestic worker who had spotted the suspects tampering with the driveway gate of neighbouring premises screamed to our officer, when he arrived, that the three suspects were running down the road.

“He gave chase and called for back-up. A second officer responded and they managed to arrest two of the suspects at the corner of Goble and Hazel roads. A third suspect got away,” Mathios said.
