PORT NATAL FOURS FINALS SET FOR WESTVILLE

- CHERYL WATERMAN

LAWN bowl athletes may appear to be a picture of calm and composure, but on Saturday inner tension will run high when the eight surviving teams in the Port Natal Fours competition meet in the semi-finals and finals and strive to maintain accuracy and nerve as they aim to be closest to the jack.

In the unpredictable game that is lawn bowls, just when you think it’s all decided one fast drive can scatter the bowls and it’s game on again.

In the men’s semi-finals the team skipped by Steve van Niekerk from Parkhill Bowling Club will take on Wayne Rittmuller’s Stella Park boys and Steve van Rooyen and his Durban Wanderers team will face off against Roger Boulle’s home side from Westville Bowling Club.

The women’s semis see the Port Natal pairs winner, Cheryl Mostert, and her Umhlali team, oppose a member of last year’s winning combination, Gloria White, who will skip her new crew from Parkhill.

The second semi-final promises some high drama when the winning skip in last year’s tournament, Louise Larkin, leads her Stella Park team against fellow club mate Bronwyn Webber and her squad.

Spectators are assured of world class bowls as the upper echelon of Port Natal Bowls take to the greens in games of 21 ends to do battle for the men’s Natal Centenary Rinks Championship trophy and the women’s Parkhill Memorial trophy.

Take in all the action at 9am at Westville Bowling Club.

On Tuesday, October 23, the bowling fraternity bids farewell and extends best bowling wishes to Wayne Rittmuller as he jets off to Australia to represent South Africa in the World Singles Champion of Champions tournament at St John’s Bowling Club in Sydney.

Port Natal Bowls affiliated clubs are reminded of the General Council Meeting to be held at Berea Bowling Club at 9am on Saturday, October 27.

Attention to the Notices of Motion forwarded to each club is required.
