SA Fashion Week is 21

Its coming of age will be celebrated with some outstandin­g ranges shown in Sandton City next week – many from young designers

CELEBRATIN­G 21 years of fashion, the autumn and winter season of SA Fashion Week (SAFW), AW19, will take place at Sandton City from October 23-27, where the new kids on the block, BRICS designer collection­s and some of our favourite local designers will take to the runway.

Here is a round-up of some of the young designers to look out for.

INGA ATELIER

Inga Atelier by Inga Gubeka is a contempora­ry lifestyle brand that specialise­s in leather goods. This luxury leather brand, which has been making waves locally and internatio­nally, will make its debut on the SAFW runway, showing backpacks, clutches, totes and laptop bags, on October 26 at 6 pm.

KUMKANI BESPOKE

Winner of the 2018 SA Fashion Week’s MINI Scouting Menswear Competitio­n, Sandile Mlambo is a self-taught designer. The founder of House of Alfalfa will be presenting his collection on October 27 at 6 pm.

VIRTUE SA

Founded by Zanhri Gertse, Virtue SA is a streetwear brand that produces quality, gender-neutral garments based on comfort. Gertse, who is a Elizabeth Galloway Academy of Fashion graduate, won the 2018 Edcon Design Innovation Challenge. She will take to the runway on October26 at 9pm.

SHAAZIA ADAM

Shaazia Adam is a Mozambican/ South African designer who started fashion at a very young age. At 16, she launched her brand at Club Militar and started showcasing at Mozambique Fashion Week. She specialise­s in delicate couture pieces. See her range on October 24 at 9pm.

HSE OF BESPOKE

Channellin­g feminine simplicity for any occasion, Hse of Bespoke by Waseefa Hutton embraces simple beauty via artistic expression for women of all ethnicitie­s. Hutton will showcase on October 24 at 4 pm.

OUTERWEAR

SAFW New Talent Search Finalist brand Outerwear was founded by Ngcebo Mnyandu and Siyabonga Ntini, Durban University of Technology fashion and textiles graduates. Outerwear seeks to celebrate feminine bodies in the arts, politics and every realm. See it on October 21 at 6.30 pm.
