Harry Gwala needs to become a ‘fortress’

- Minenhle Mkhize

MARITZBURG UNITED are still searching for that elusive victory at home in the PSL this season, but Eric Tinkler has set his sights on turning the Harry Gwala Stadium into a fortress.

The Team of Choice will entertain Polokwane City tomorrow at Harry Gwala in a league encounter. Last Friday, Tinkler succumbed to a 1-0 defeat against Wits in his debut match, with Lehlohonolo Majoro bagging the winner for the Clever Boys.

Tinkler wants to bring back the happy days to Harry Gwala.

“It is very important to win home games. There’s no time left. We’ve got six home games. In our ideal world, in order to save us from relegation, we need to win those six and basically we are there. So, if we can do that, so much the better. That’s got to be our target. We have to make sure that we collect maximum points here at home and we make this a fortress. We have to make it difficult for opposition teams to come here. It is not something new because that’s what existed seven months ago. We need to try to resurrect that,” Tinkler said.

Maritzburg are languishing at the bottom of the league standings with 11 points from 19 games. In their remaining six games at home they will face Polokwane, AmaZulu, Bloemfontein Celtic, Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United.

“The problem is not tactical, it is mental. We need to change that and that’s what is important. That change can be something so minimal,” Tinkler said.

Maritzburg have suffered seven defeats on the trot. The last time they won a game was in September against Bloemfontein Celtic. |
