Parties pay tribute to ANC spokesperson
ANC KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson Ricardo Mthembu, who succumbed to Covid-19-related complications yesterday, has been described as a “tried and tested leader”.
Mthembu, 50, was admitted to a hospital in Ballito, on the North Coast, last week and had spent several days in intensive care.
KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala described Mthembu as “a dedicated, committed and tried and tested leader of the people of KwaZulu-Natal”.
“Mthembu’s untimely demise has robbed us of a comrade, a brother, a confidant and cadre who had a sharp brain, a deep sense of humility and extraordinary leadership qualities. He was one of the finest among us.”
ANC KZN provincial secretary Mdumiseni Ntuli said Mthembu had not just been a voice to convey the “collective wisdom and collective messages of the ANC”, but he had also been a great comrade and a wonderful companion in the struggle to build a national democratic society.
Speaker of KZN’s legislature, Nontembeko Boyce, said Mthembu’s death had left legislators deeply saddened, as great things were expected of the MPL and former KwaDukuza mayor.
“We were still expecting a lot from him, having served in the local government for eight years,” she said via a statement.
IFP KZN chairperson Thami Ntuli said that they had been saddened and shocked to learn of Mthembu’s death.
“We extend our sincerest condolences during this time of bereavement to his immediate and extended family, his friends and loved ones, and to all who knew Ricardo. He served his community, his party and the country well. May his soul forever rest in peace.
Ntuli said.
DA KZN leader Zwakele Mncwango also expressed his condolences to the family of Mthembu, and the ANC.
“Today is a sad day in our province, Covid-19 is the enemy. On behalf of the DA in KwZulu-Natal, I would like to pass our condolences to the family of honourable Ricardo Mthembu.”
