TOBY Alderweireld’s 81st-minute header sealed a 2-1 Premier League victory for Tottenham Hotspur against Arsenal in the first north London derby in their new stadium yesterday.

The match appeared to be heading for a draw, but Alderweireld claimed all three points for Spurs to move Jose Mourinho’s side above Arsenal into eighth place in the battle for local pride.

With three games left Tottenham have 52 points to Arsenal’s 50, but are seven points behind fourth-placed Leicester City.

Arsenal took the lead in spectacular fashion with Alexandre Lacazette’s 17th-minute pile-driver, but they were pegged back almost immediately as Son Heung-min punished a defensive error.

Both sides were denied by the woodwork and Arsenal were in the ascendancy after the break before Tottenham’s strong finish sealed a third successive home win since the restart.

Elsewhere, Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha was subjected to racist abuse on social media and the forward shared screenshots ahead of yesterday’s Premier League game at Aston Villa.

The Ivory Coast international tweeted images of the messages he received from an individual on Saturday, which included one of members of the white supremacist organisation the Ku Klux Klan.

West Midlands Police said later yesterday that a 12-year-old from Solihull had been taken into custody for sending racist messages to a footballer. They did not name Zaha.

“We were alerted to a series of racist messages sent to a footballer today and after looking into them and conducting checks, we have arrested a boy,” the police said on Twitter.

The Premier League condemned the incident on its official website.

“This behaviour is completely unacceptable and the Premier League stands alongside @wilfriedzaha in opposing this, and discrimination in any form,” it said.

“There is #NoRoomForRacism, anywhere. We will continue to support players, managers, coaches and their family members who receive serious discriminatory online abuse.”

Palace lent their support to Zaha, saying that the abuse was an “absolute disgrace” while manager Roy Hodgson said before the game that the club was working to identify the culprit.

Villa beat Palace 2-0 with Egyptian forward Trezeguet scoring twice to revive their Premier League survival hopes.

Meanwhile, Wolverhampton Wanderers boosted their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League with an emphatic 3-0 home win over Everton.
